Documentaries are a fantastic way to dive into any subject matter and learn a vast amount of information fairly quickly. Whether it’s a smash hit of a documentary like Tiger King or something more Indie, who doesn’t love a good documentary?
Over the years, I have watched numerous music documentaries that have blown me away. Although listing every single one is a bit too time-consuming and pointless, there are a handful of music documentaries I think every person should check out. If you’re a fan of these artists, they’ll interest you even more, but either way, they’re worth watching.

Arguably one of the best documentaries in the music realm, and more specifically guitar, It Might Get Loud features The Edge, Jimmy Page, and Jack White as they sit down and discuss music and guitar. Outside of their inner circle showing each other various guitar techniques, the documentary follows each guitarist alone and dives into their music history. It’s great, entertaining, and extremely knowledgeable for anyone who plays or is interested in guitar.
As far as progressive rock is concerned, there isn’t a better group than Rush. If you’re a fan of Rush and want to know more about the group, their 2010 documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage goes through their entire history of success, struggling, almost quitting, and breaking through.
Similar to Rush: Beyond the Light Stage, The Clash: Westway to the World is a documentary surrounding the British punk band, The Clash. The documentary takes in old footage of the group and new interviews to showcase the history of the band.
Thelonious Monk is a historic figure in the bebop piano world of the 20th century. Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser is a documentary about Monk’s life, which features live performances from Monk and posthumous interviews with friends and family.
What Happened, Miss Simone? is a biographical piece about singer, songwriter, and activist Nina Simone. The documentary paints a picture of Simone’s life as a civil rights activist, her move to Liberia, music career, and archival footage of Simone.
