Music Recommendations #9

Music Recommendations is a series of blogs dedicated to recommending music I find enjoyable. These blogs will cover a wide range of music I’ve recently discovered or have enjoyed for a long time. My purpose in writing these blogs is to promote positivity and happiness pertaining to music, rather than be critical of music I don’t like. At least that’s what I hope to achieve. If you’re interested in buying or listening to any of the records, click the title of one for a direct link to Amazon.
My current infatuation with 1990s emo and rock hasn’t faded since I was an adolescent, and it only continues to grow as I age. Although I’m still in my younger years, it’s an odd thought process of where I’ll be a decade from now or even in my senior years.
I’m not sure if this is a motif of my fatalistic attitude toward my life or an irrational thought. Either way, I suppose it doesn’t matter since this is supposed to be a recommendation of music I find enjoyable. Nonetheless, here is an odd arrangement of records I dove into this past week.

Arguably my favorite emo rock band from the 1990s, who doesn’t love Sunny Day Real Estate? Although their debut record, diary, is the group’s most successful work, LP2 is a better album, in my opinion. The lyrical content, themes, musical composes, and flow of the record make it stand out from anything put out in the 1990s. Definitely give it a listen or two.

A bit of a common answer on the grand scheme of modern indie alternative rock, but who cares. Turnover is a great band, and their 2019 record, Altogether, is a fantastic representation of everything right about the modern shoegaze genre. It’s relaxing, dejected, and a great album through and through.

Little Simz is a fantastic rapper from London, and her 2019 breakthrough record, GREY Area, is a must-listen for any hardcore hip-hop and rap fanatic. Although GREY Area is arguably a perfect album, Simz recently released Drop 6, a fantastic EP that features everything to love about Simz. Definitely check it out.

Arguably one of the most underrated bands, Modest Mouse has a massive discography, and their first record (that I don’t feel like typing out) was a groundbreaking album in the underground rock genre. Whether it’s the refined clean, yet dirty guitars or the overall gloomy aesthetic, I love this album.
