Iconic Punk Albums
Since the inception of punk, there have been countless records, demos, bands, and artists alike that have propelled the genre to the forefront of music. Whether you’re a fan of punk music or not aware of it, the legacy behind punk is challenging to discount for any individual.
Like any other music genre, there are transcendent and inadequate records from any specific niche of music. More specifically, there are iconic records that represent the genre as a whole and are continually looked at as significant moments of music history.
Although this list has undoubtedly left out several fantastic and iconic records, here is a good start to check out some of the most iconic punk albums. If you’re interested in listening to or buying any of the records listed, click on the title of one for a direct link to Amazon.
One of the most influential bands in the punk realm and music itself, The Clash’s self-titled debut is one of their most vital records. It’s raw, powerful, and a perfect representation of what The Clash bring.
Coming out at the same time as The Clash’s self-titled, Rocket to Russia is my favorite Ramones record. It’s simple, catchy, and is 19 tracks deep of everything to love about The Ramones.
Significantly more of a raw representation of the genre, Bad Brains’ self-titled debut is an iconic stepping point for hardcore punk. The pure musicianship and frontman capabilities of H.R. is indisputable and is perfectly resembled on their first album.
Besides having the best name of any band to exist, Dead Kennedys Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables is an excellent politically-charged anthemic album. The record birthed the group’s most popular song Holiday in Cambodia, and as a whole, the record is fantastic.
Although a bit more unknown than the other records on this list, The Germs only album, (GI), is regarded as the first-ever hardcore punk album and is undoubtedly a milestone in that regard alone.
Similar to the Germs, but more of a familiar group, the Sex Pistols only had one record throughout their entire lifespan as a band. Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols is arguably one of the most famous punk records for all of the right reasons. Definitely listen to it if you haven’t already.
Having numerous vocalists and band members over their career, most site Black Flag’s Damaged as the groups best work. Taking more of a severe notion on their lyrical content with the addition of Henry Rollins in the early 1980s, Black Flag reached perfection with Damaged.
Forming a sub-genre of their own, Bikini Kill established the riot grrrl sub-genre of punk. Pussy Whipped is the group’s first full-length album and was a fantastic change of pace compared to the rest of punk rock in the 1990s. Definitely give it a listen.
