Great Modern Blues Artists and Bands

Given that I play guitar, I’ve always had an interest in various blues artists and bands. My early days of playing had a heavy focus on classic rock and blues artists such as Freddie King, B.B. King, Robert Johnson, and countless others.
Although blues isn’t as popular as it once was during the 20th century, it still has a strong niche of an audience attached to it. When concerts finally come back, notable blues artists will continue to perform in front of massive crowds while releasing an abundance of music along the way.
Blues is still great and it’s important to list great modern blues artists and bands. Keep in mind, there are countless blues artists today, these are just a few of my favorites. If you’re interested in listening to any of the artists or bands listed below, click on the title of one for a link to their music on Amazon.

Gary Clark Jr. is the most notable blues guitarist today. Since his first release and 2011, Clark reached stardom after his 2011 performance at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads festival. He’s an excellent guitarist with a knack for pushing the boundaries on modern blues and rock music.

Aside from his great guitar playing, Marcus King is the epitome of having the blues voice. King recently released his debut solo record, El Dorado early 2020, but has released a number of albums with The Marcus King Band. An excellent musician who is surely worth checking out, not to mention he’s only 24.

Married couple Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi have been in the blues scene since 2011, with Trucks being a guitar prodigy having played with the Allman Brothers Band when he was only 13 during the 1990s. Tedeschi Trucks Band is an awesome group that’s filled with great songwriting and lengthy jam tracks.

Similar to Marcus King, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram is extremely young for the number of accolades he’s already accomplished. Kingfish is only 21 and has released a number of beautifully done blues records accompanied by incredible guitar playing.

Southern Avenue is a Tennessee five-piece blues band that is new to the scene since forming in 2015. The group has garnished a lot of attention with their captivating songwriting and powerful vocal performances by vocalist Tierinii Jackson.
