Calloused Release Debut Punk EP ‘GOSP’
Slowly chipping away at music for years doesn’t have many non-music benefits, with one of the few non-music-related perks being the friends you make with it. Even a natural introvert like myself can’t help but get excited whenever any of my friends form a new project or pursue an artistic endeavor—the more music, the better.
Today, some of my closest friends released their debut EP, and I’m ecstatic about it. Calloused is one of the newest bands from Buffalo, and their debut EP GOSP is rooted in classic punk that’s stimulating to hear in this day and age. The four-track 12 minute and some change EP is reminiscent of early Clash (hence the fourth track being a Joe Strummer cover), Alkaline Trio, Buzzcocks, and The Damned but in a contemporary light.
The EP begins with the track Pseudo-Fiction and has all of the punk elements you’d appreciate, plus a catchy chorus. It drives, doesn’t stray around the point, and is a great way to introduce the EP (Tommy Boy sample at the beginning is somehow menacing and fits the track perfectly). I especially enjoy the clean lead guitar that comes into the second verse—a nice change of pace separating the two verses from one another and keeping it bustling along.
Centimentery is a slightly slower-paced and poppier variation of their great punk formula and has a hummable lead guitar line with a booming drum fill to begin it. Donor Card picks up the pace and is a zestful track with a smooth dynamic shift into the bridge. Who wouldn’t love that chorus? The EP concludes with Coma Girl, a Joe Strummer cover from his 2003 album Streetcore. It carries a similar style to the excellent original but with their spin on the intro.
After listening, I feel unbelievably lucky to have so many close friends who pursue music, some of whom I make music with. Regardless, I loved GOSP and can’t wait to see what Calloused releases in the future. I understand I’m probably biased with all of these local releases I arbitrarily write about from time to time, but who cares. The music is genuinely great, so spin that shiz.
