Book Recommendations #1
Welcome to Book Recommendations, a series of blogs dedicated to recommending books I enjoy. These blogs will cover a wide range of books I’ve recently read, or have loved for a long time. If you’re interested in purchasing any of the books, click on the title of one for a direct link to Amazon.
Yes, the title of this site hints at a website heavily devoted to music, but I enjoy various pieces of literature just as much as music, sue me. Similar to Music Recommendations, I’ll be recommending numerous books I enjoy. Obviously, it’s a lot more challenging to read through different works of literature than to listen to records, so these blogs won’t be as frequent. I think you understand the point, but here are some books I’ve recently read:
Cormac McCarthy has been one of my favorite writers for several years. Although he doesn’t write grammatically correct when it comes to quotations, his storytelling and descriptive ability are like no other writer. Child of God is an extremely graphic story about Lester Ballad–a violent man who is falsely accused of a crime he didn’t commit. This book isn’t for the faint of heart, but it’s a well-told dark tale.
I recently read Woman in the Nineteenth Century for one of my classes, and I’m glad I did. For those who don’t know, Margaret Fuller is regarded as one of the early women’s rights advocates in the 19th century. Woman in the Nineteenth Century is considered to be one of the primary documents and components for American Feminism. Fuller expresses several transcendentalist ideas in her writing, especially regarding the importance of the individual versus societal expectations. Yes, the writing is a lot different in comparison to more modern simpler works, but it’s worth reading for the historical standpoint alone.
The Ritual is a straight-up cult horror from author, Adam Nevill. It’s incredibly dismal and graphic as the story unfolds. However, it’s not just a bland horror novel. It has a pretty unique and in-depth characterization of the four main protagonists. The Ritual is about four old college friends who venture off on an exploration of the Scandinavian wilderness. Tensions rise between the four as a shortcut through the woods turns out to not be what they expected. Netflix released a film adaptation of it in 2017 with the same name, and the film is relatively faithful to the book.
