A World Like No Other: The Experience of Beyond Van Gogh Buffalo

Although I don’t have a single ounce of artistic purpose in the painting or drawing sense, I have a strong appreciation for art. One of my favorite things to do is visit local art museums wherever I am, with Buffalo’s own Albright-Knox Art Gallery being one of my favorite.
I’m incredibly excited for the museum to open up again, new and improved, but I admit I’ve been missing out on an art-museum experience since the pandemic erupted. Thankfully, when I heard about the Beyond Van Gogh experience in the Buffalo area, I knew it’d be a perfect experience to achieve that itch I’ve been craving.
For those who don’t know, Beyond Van Gogh is an imaginative and immersive presentation crafted for our unique times by world-renowned audiovisual designers. It uses cutting-edge projection technology to create an engaging journey into the world of Van Gogh.
The presentation and event utilize Van Gogh’s dreams, thoughts, and words to drive the experience as a narrative, moving along projection swathed walls wrapped in light, color, and shapes that swirl, dance, and refocus into flowers, cafes, and landscapes.
Masterpieces, now freed from frames, come alive, appear and disappear, flow across the walls and floor while the minutia of details arouse our heightened senses. Through Van Gogh’s own words set to a symphonic score, attendees come to a new appreciation of the artist’s stunning work.
It was an experience like no other, a moment of pure serenity that I can’t recommend enough if you’re in the Buffalo area. The first room features bits of information regarding Van Gogh’s life and legacy, with the main engagement room followed by the gift shop after.
As great as the art and narration was, the score of the entire experience made it for me. As soon as it was over, I immediately asked a worker where I could find the score. “On Spotify under the Beyond Van Gogh Buffalo playlist,” they said. Now my day was set for pure joy. Nevertheless, check it out if you haven’t already.
