The Parts You Don’t Hear – Nick Drake
Nick Drake was an immaculate English singer-songwriter from the late 1960s and 1970s who had a craft for melancholy vocals with a subtle plucking guitar. As notable as Drake is today, he only had three records throughout his short career and failed to achieve a wide audience when he was alive. The short career Drake had came to an end when he sadly passed in 1974 at the age of 26 after an accidental overdose on anti-depressants. After his death, Drake’s music began to see a massive surge in popularity, allowing the world to see the genius behind his music.
It’s no secret that Drake struggled with depression, as you can tell throughout his lyrical motifs with some people speculating his death wasn’t an accident. Regardless of his unfortunate end, Drake’s music will live on for years to come with many looking to his last record Pink Moon being a monumental step in music history. In fact, Pink Moon is so notable today that Rolling Stone Magazine recently ranked it at 201 on its 500 greatest albums of all-time.
Although Drake had three records in his short career, he rarely played shows, with there not being a single live video on the web of Drake performing. All we have are his three full-length records and a recorded John Peel session from 1969. It’s a shame Drake never saw his career turn into what it is today, but at least we have his discography to look back on.
Above is a short documentary on the legacy of Nick Drake, discussing how he was virtually unknown at the time of his death and the surge his career had after. Be sure to take a thorough listen while watching it and explore his discography to see how artists like R.E.M, The Cure, and Elliott Smith were heavily influenced by him.
