Live Music Recommendations #16 – Pink Floyd The Wall – Live in Earl’s Court 1980
At this point, I might as well transition this blog into a solely dedicated Pink Floyd writing piece. Considering I write about the group once a week, my obsession with the band is a bit more obvious than any of the other band’s I deeply enjoy. However, since this is my blog, I truly don’t care.
Nevertheless, this Live Music Recommendation features a performance from Pink Floyd during the Wall Tour from Earl’s Court. This 1980 concert is special for a number of reasons including an immaculate performance, one of only 31 shows from The Wall tour, and the video itself is one of the best quality videos from the tour.
There aren’t too many full concerts of Pink Floyd during their peak, but I owe a large number of thanks to Notelu for this upload. I can’t get enough of Pink Floyd and I would give up several years of my life to have experienced this concert. Besides the show, the history behind the tour is fascinating since the group invested too much money into the tour, which evidently caused them to make nothing from the 31 shows they played.
Aside from breaking even every night, the group recently kicked out Richard Wright, even though he performed during the tour as a paid musician. Fighting and tension were at an all-time high primarily between David Gilmour and Roger Waters, with the two of them not speaking and staying in separate hotels.
Despite the ongoing issues and complications facing the group, they continually managed to pull off a monumental live performance throughout the tour. My favorite tracks from the August 8th and 9th performance at Earl’s Court in 1980 include Mother, Is There Anybody Out There?, Hey You, and Goodbye Blue Sky. Don’t take my word for it, watch the concert and appreciate this majestic moment from music history.
